Homework Information
Homework is a vital part of the educational program at North Coventry. The idea of homework is to provide valuable practice and reinforcement of skills learned in class to ensure the students gain a level of mastery and comfort with using these skills. Homework should not be a torture test. Assignments are not material that is new or unfamiliar to the students. They are things that the children should be familiar with, and should be able to attempt reasonably.
Homework in fourth grade (not counting independent reading) should not take more than a DEDICATED 30-40 minutes. Homework assignments are relatively consistent to allow for the development of routines at home that are conducive to making the homework time a valuable opportunity for practice and less of a chore. If you find that the average time of completing regular homework assignments is dragging on past an hour, please contact me so we can look in to alternative measures to improve the situation.
Regular homework assignments will include:
Word Work -- the children should be sorting their words OUT LOUD at least twice, followed by the completion of the weekly assignment that is due by Wednesday of each week. Spelling tests will be on Thursday of each week, followed by the issuing of new words.
EDM Math -- homework will be regularly assigned in the students "Study Links" journal. If you need additional support to help with assignments, the Student Resource Book will be of great help. It is made to stay at home, as we will not need to use it in class much. It is for you to use as a resource to be familiar with the vocabulary and techniques we are using in math class so we can create a level of consistency with the message the children are receiving. There may be times when the student math journal comes home as well. Unit reviews will come home towards the end of each unit to help prepare for the end of unit "Progress Check". These pages can be found on the class fusion page at www.ojrsd.com.
Independent reading -- the simple fact is, the more children read, the better they get at doing it. While we do spend a lot of time working on reading in school, practice at home is equally important. Time spent reading at home will help to increase fluency, increase reading stamina, and improve overall reading ability, as well as the ability to learn in all phases of school. We will start at 20 minutes a night, and work to build that up to over 30 minutes and beyond as the reading stamina of the children increases. There will also be a selection of reading/response assignments for the children to complete on a regular basis to demonstrate their successful reading.
Please check the student homework planning journal daily for specific assignments and information. Homework is relatively consistent, but changes can occur from time to time.
